The History
The Oakdale One Room Schoolhouse is one of several schools that dotted the landscape of Hunlock Township, Luzerne County, PA. Built in 1890, it served the community for 64 years until a new consolidated elementary school opened in the township serving the newly formed Northwest Area School District. The schoolhouse was constructed in the traditional building style of the day and served the education needs of the nearby community for several generations.
Today the structure survives as the last remaining unaltered one room schoolhouse in Hunlock Township. The Hunlock Creek Historical Society was formed to preserve this locally significant structure as a means to educate future generations about the educational roots of the community. |
